If you enjoy history and architecture, you should definitely visit Antwerp’s Historic Centre. “Het Steen”, “Brabo” and “De Vlaeykensgang” are just a few of the historic sites Antwerp has to offer.The most prominent landmarks in Antwerp’s Historic Centre are without a doubt “Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal” and “De Boerentoren”. “Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal” is a exquisite example of Gothic architecture. With a height of 123 meters it’s hard to miss. In the vicinity of the cathedral, “De Boerentoren” towers above the city. “De Boerentoren” was constructed in 1929 and was Europe’s first skyscraper. The tower has a staggering height of 100 meters and is built in Art Deco style. Take a stroll through history and discover “Henderik Conscienceplein”. Be amazed by the beautiful “Carolus Borromeuskerk”. The church was constructed in the early 1600s and is best known for its exquisite baroque facade. The secluded square is shaded and cosy, so feel free to take a break and enjoy a refreshing drink.

If you are looking for a more vibrant place, “Groenplaats” and “Grote Markt” are definitly worth your time. Both squares are littered with bars, pubs and restaurants. Be sure to order a “Bolleke De Koninck”. Everybody will assume you’re one of the locals.

If you want to do some shopping, Antwerp’s busiest shopping street is right around the corner. At “De Meir” you’ll find everything your heart desires. Almost every major brand has a branch at “De Meir”. Be sure to drop by “De Wapper” and visit “Rubenshuis”, Peter Paul Rubens’ former residence. Another must-see is the newly renovated “Stadsfeestzaal”. This Neoclassical landmark has been restored to its former glory after a fierce fire nearly destroyed it in 2000.
